Feedback on Ancillary Task: Digipak

After taking the pictures for the digipak ands designing them for our final digipak design (which can be viewed on my blog) our class got together to gather feedback of what we've done so far. Here's the feedback we got on our digipak:

Photographic images; framing, focus, camera angle, lighting, colour, background and mise en scene
  • Sharp, well lit and well framed image - the headless model in keeping with the "indie" genre.
  • Interesting mix of props - wealth vs. low life brick wall background.
  • Strong colour.
Typogropahy and text; choice of fonts, sizing, layout, colour, readibility, language register and content
  • Font appropriate
  • Size and layout are okay.
Layout decisions; rule of thirds, text positioning, sizing, balance of image and text and focus of attention
  • All good - figure and braces succeed in drawing the viewers attentiom.
Genre codes and indicators of audience targetting
  • Style and choice of track names suggest an "indie" audience, young male?
Overall impact; what works and what can be improved
  • Strong impact from cover.
  • Inside faces lack detail - add track lyrics etc...

Production Progress - 9th February

Today the braces/suspenders had arrived and seeing as Jon wasn't in due to illness, Ashley and I decided to crack on with our side of the ancillary task, the digipak. When trying on the braces, our chosen model for the braces broke them, but thankfully we bought a second pair for such an incidence. After this event I was elected to model the braces. The images we took were located by Fanshawe Swimming Pool where a wall with slight hints of graffiti can be found. We found this as a perfect location as its not to attention seeking but fits the background idea.

The images needed were of me facing the camera, face on for the front cover, and one of me with my back to the camera facing the wall for the back cover where the song names will be listed.

Instead of leaving the inside of the digipak empty, we decided on capturing an image which helps represent our character on the cover. Thanks to the recent winter weather, a local field had been covered in snow where we placed a cigar on the ground, seen in the characters mouth on the front cover. The cigar was placed at a certain angle so song lyrics can be applied next to the image on the digipak.

Production Progress - 2nd Feburary

We began today's by drawing up a "plan of action". This plan included details on which piece of work that needed to be started and preferably finished. The pieces of work that needed be worked were the music video, website design and a rough digipak design. Jon began on the music video production and Ashley and I carried on from the website design from the previous lesson. This involved using ideas and influences from our website PowerPoint of other bands webpages.

After completing the website design, the whole group gathered equipment to go on a photo shoot for the digipak. Whilst walking round school we looked for "rough" looking background. The best idea we thought up was a simple wall background as it keeps the buyer focused on the character.Whilst walking around we found an near exact idea of what we want our character to look like on the front cover (bottom picture).

The images below were ones taken during the photo shoot for the front of the digipak cover around the Chauncy School.
